EMDR....
EMDR is one of those therapies that sounds strange at first, yet for many people it has opened a quiet door towards healing. Originally developed for trauma, anxiety, PTSD, painful memories, and emotional shock, EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess experiences that became “stuck” inside the nervous system.
The name stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. In simple terms, it often involves moving the eyes from side to side, following sounds, tapping, or other forms of bilateral stimulation while gently focusing on memories, emotions, or sensations. Something fascinating begins to happen. The emotional charge around an experience can slowly reduce, almost as if the brain is reorganising the memory into the correct place rather than reliving it over and over again.
Most people think EMDR is only for severe trauma, but many therapists and practitioners have started exploring its use for a much wider range of issues. Confidence problems. Fear of failure. Public speaking anxiety. Relationship patterns. Creative blocks. Stress eating. Self-worth. Even performance in music, sport, study, and business.
Why? Because so many of our reactions are linked to emotional memories and subconscious associations. Perhaps years ago you were criticised, embarrassed, rejected, frightened, or made to feel small. The conscious mind forgets, but the nervous system remembers. Then, years later, the body still reacts automatically.
EMDR can sometimes interrupt these old patterns and allow the mind to create new pathways. Instead of feeling trapped inside the same emotional loop, people often describe feeling calmer, clearer, lighter, or more emotionally free.
There is also growing interest in combining EMDR-style methods with relaxation, mindfulness, hypnosis, breathwork, and visualisation. Some people use gentle bilateral tapping while imagining positive outcomes, future success, confidence, healing, or peaceful memories. The brain appears remarkably adaptable when we learn how to guide attention and emotion together.
Of course, EMDR is not magic, and it is not a replacement for medical care or professional psychological support when needed. Deep trauma work especially should be approached carefully with qualified professionals. But what makes EMDR so interesting is the reminder that the mind is not fixed. Human beings are not permanently trapped by the past.
Many of us carry emotional “files” that were never properly processed. Sometimes all healing really means is allowing the brain and body to finish a conversation that was interrupted years ago.
And perhaps that is one of the most hopeful ideas of all.
You are not necessarily broken.
You may simply be unfinished.
