Why Did the US Drop ‘Indo’ From INDOPACOM? | What It Means for India
The United States has officially restored the name U.S. Pacific Command—USPACOM, dropping “Indo” from the former U.S. Indo-Pacific Command—USINDOPACOM. The American side has described it as a return to the command’s historical identity and clarified that its mission, partnerships and geographical area of responsibility remain unchanged.
However, the word “Indo” was added in 2018 to recognise the growing strategic interconnection between the Indian and Pacific Oceans and the increasing importance of India in the regional security architecture. Its removal has therefore raised questions about changing American priorities, India’s place in the US strategic framework and the future relevance of the Quad.
In this session, we examine:
Why the US added “Indo” to Pacific Command in 2018
Why USINDOPACOM has now become USPACOM
Whether this represents symbolism or a genuine strategic shift
Possible implications for India-US relations and the Quad
China’s expanding influence and the “String of Pearls” challenge
India’s energy security and critical maritime chokepoints
India’s vision of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific
The significance of SAGAR and India’s maritime diplomacy
