How to Model an Interference Fit in Abaqus CAE

Welcome back to another Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tutorial!
In this video, we’ll learn how to model an interference fit in Abaqus — a key concept in mechanical design and contact mechanics.

🔹 Part 1 – Theory:
We’ll start with a short explanation of interference fit, why it’s used (e.g., in press-fitted assemblies like gears, bearings, and bushings), and how contact pressure develops when two parts are assembled.

🔹 Part 2 – Simulation Demo in Abaqus CAE:
We’ll model a circular plug inserted into a ring, introduce interference, and then let Abaqus automatically resolve that interference to compute the contact pressure distribution.
Key steps include:

Defining the geometry of shaft and ring

Setting up contact interaction (master/slave surfaces)

Using the interference fit option in Abaqus

Visualizing stresses and contact pressure after interference removal

This tutorial helps engineers, students, and researchers understand both the theory and practical simulation of interference fits in Abaqus.
