AEC Mandator V8. LVL164H. Part 3. Under restoration, road test. Contains some garage language !!!

March 2003. LVL 164H Undergoing a full restoration, and road testing after fitting a none standard Fuller Roadranger RTO 609 gearbox, in place of the original AEC 6 speed box, this made a vast difference to drive-ability and performance, although it did produce an unusual shift pattern.
These AVM8/740, Mandator V8's should have been world beaters, but under investment and rushed development by parent company British Leyland made them a disaster. with only 365 being built, but at 247 bhp; they where the most powerful production tractor unit available in the UK at that time. Ironically AEC's engineer's had all but sorted the problem out, using the slightly larger AVM/800/1 engine, when Leyland pulled the plug on them !
As can be seen some vital components where missing, such as a cab door, glass,a passenger seat, though most of it was on a private estate.
For anyone who's interested there is a set of picture's of the restoration on my Flickr site at http://www.flickr.com/photos/75262259@N03/sets/72157629374006579/
