How I Make Money To Travel and Live Abroad (+YouTube Adsense Secret)

How do I make money to travel and live abroad? The short answer is: My income comes from working for a digital marketing agency in Shanghai, doing a variety of freelance work, YouTube Adsense revenue, making commissions on affiliate partnerships, Patreon donations, and some investments.

HOW I STARTED OUT:

In summer 2016, after saving money for a couple years, I began life as a full time digital nomad.

(I have huge respect for people who turn their blogs or YouTubes into their sole source of income. It’s a ton of work, and the audience’s expectations are always increasing.)

I did that full time for a while and i really liked it, before realizing that I didn’t quite enjoy the hustle of travel blogging as much as I thought I would. But I wasn’t ready to give it up completely…

That's when I decided to diversify my income.

1) DIGITAL MARKETING AGENCY

I came back to Shanghai at the beginning of 2017 and started canvasing for work, putting my YouTube and Facebook stats at the top of my resume. Within a couple weeks I landed a job in a digital marketing agency.

This way I can work with a lot of huge clients - Chinese companies that I feel privileged to be able to represent.

Also, one of the biggest perks of having a “real” job in Shanghai is that I can have a WORK VISA, which allows me to live and work legally in China! A lot of people are illegally employed in China and this ensured that I wouldn’t get deported.

2) FREELANCE WORK

In addition to leveraging my social media to find a full-time job in Shanghai, because of the platform I’d built, there is a steady stream of people reach out with freelance work opportunity.

Publications and apps that have seen my content will simply reach out and ask me to host their content. And I will receive accommodation, travel and a stipend.

3) AFFILIATE PARTNERSHIPS

Affiliate partnerships also make up a part of my income, where I can receive a commission on particular services that I have recommended via my blog. This isn’t a very significant portion of my income, but when leveraged correctly, I have seen some bloggers make all of their money with this method.

For example, when a blogger says something like “use the promo code MONKEY…” etc, you have an incentive because you might receive a discount on the product or service, but that’s also good for me as a blogger because, as the affiliate, I make a commission on each sale.

Also* (Facebook pay-per-share affiliate partnerships) Facebook pages represented by other bloggers will publish content, and in order to boost the impressions and engagements on their image/video/link, I will sometimes share it on my page in exchange for a stipend.

4) YOUTUBE ADSENSE

Of course, there’s Youtube income. I get a few hundred thousand views a month on average, and every thousand views my channel receives translates to roughly 1.5 to 2 dollars in my pocket.

I don’t generate enough revenue to live entirely from YouTube Adsense, but the money I do make, plus the Patreon donations I receive for each video uploaded, is more than enough to cover my rent and basic living costs, which is plenty for me considering that I really enjoy making these videos and I have fun doing it.

5) INVESTMENTS (not mentioned in the video)

Whenever I have a little money left over at the end of the month, I like to put some into the stock market. The Canadian Cannabis industry is my bread and butter for stock market investment.

CONCLUSION

I’m not drowning in money by any means, but at the same time I’m making a comfortable living doing things I enjoy, and I'm not stressed.

It's not about how much money you make; it's about how much you spend! I'm used to living with $20/day so as long as I'm generating more than that I'm in the green :)
