Epic Boat Fail Provides Empathy for New Tractor Owners
Today, I’m sharing an embarrassing story that taught me a huge lesson about empathy and what it feels like to be a total "newbie" with a piece of equipment. I get a lot of questions from new tractor owners who are nervous, intimidated, and sometimes just plain frustrated with their new machines. They ask me, "Tractor Mike, how do you know what it feels like?" Well, this story is how I know. It's about a used boat, a simple dock, a youth group, and a whole lot of gravel.
Years ago, my family and I saved up to buy a used Sea Ray speedboat. I'd operated all kinds of equipment before, so I figured a boat would be no problem. The previous owner, a kind soul, spent half a day showing us the ropes—how to launch it, adjust the trim, and generally not look like a complete idiot.
Shortly after that, we were out on Table Rock Lake, a beautiful spot, when the kids needed to make a bathroom stop. We headed for the "Old 86" campground, which has some nice, clean restrooms. Sounds easy, right? Wrong.
The dock was small and had no railings to grab. As a new boat owner, I quickly learned a hard truth: you can't steer a boat unless the propeller is moving. I started my slow approach, but the lake's waves, my inexperience, and the fact that I couldn't "steer" it like a tractor made it a nightmare.
Nearby, a church youth group saw me struggling. Being lake-savvy kids, they could tell I was a total rookie. With hands outstretched, they lined up on the dock, ready to help me guide the boat in. But every time I got close, a wave would push me off, or I’d get the angle wrong. I'd have to shove the throttle in reverse, back out, and try all over again.
My kids, who were watching this whole ordeal, were getting more and more embarrassed with each failed attempt. They weren't shy about expressing their frustration, either! After multiple tries and zero progress, I was at my breaking point. I didn't want to damage my new boat, and I certainly didn't want to fail in front of my kids and that group of onlookers.
In a fit of frustration, I slammed the throttle down and turned the boat away from the dock, heading back to the main channel. But as I did, I made a critical error. My propeller hit a shallow gravel bar just under the water's surface. With loud clatter, the propeller launched a literal shower of pebbles and gravel into the air. The youth group on the dock, who had been trying to help just moments before, were now running for their lives to avoid the gravel barrage. We didn't look back. We just sped away, defeated and more than a little mortified.
It's one of the most embarrassing things I've ever done. But that experience has stuck with me and given me a profound sense of empathy for every new tractor owner who watches my channel.
When I hear from a new tractor owner who’s frustrated or scared of damaging their machine, I think back to that day on Table Rock Lake. I know exactly how they feel. Operating any new machine—whether it's a tractor, a boat, or anything else—is intimidating. It's a new skill that takes time to learn. You feel clumsy, you're worried about breaking something, and you're afraid of looking silly.
That's why I created this channel. My mission is to guide new tractor owners through the entire process:
Educating Themselves: Understanding how tractors work.
Determining Needs: Choosing the right size and type of tractor for their specific jobs.
Navigating the Purchase: Making sure they get a fair deal and the right equipment.
Operation and Maintenance: Learning how to safely and effectively use their tractor, and how to keep it running for years to come.
So, if you're out there, a new tractor owner feeling like you're going to break something or that you're just not "getting it," don't worry. Just get as much seat time as you can. Take it easy, be patient, and with a little practice, you'll feel confident and capable. Just like I became seasoned as a kid, driving a tractor, you will, too.
Now, as for my boat driving skills? My family still won't let me try to drive the boat into the slip or onto the trailer. Some lessons are learned, and some skills… well, some you just don't have.
