N10-009 Objective 1.4: What is DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)? 🌐 #comptia #networkplus

How do hundreds of smartphones and laptops connect to a public Wi-Fi network without everyone having to manually type in an IP address? If you are studying for the CompTIA Network+ (N10-009), you must understand the mechanics of DHCP. Operating on UDP Ports 67 and 68, the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is the automated system that acts as a digital concierge, instantly handing out vital network settings to every new device that joins.

Instead of an IT administrator manually configuring static settings for every single piece of hardware, DHCP does the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Using the DORA process (Discover, Offer, Request, Acknowledge), a DHCP server instantly assigns a unique IP address, the correct subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers. This is the protocol that makes seamless, plug-and-play internet connectivity possible.
