Looking for fossils in Montana

After a five-week research experience that included a picturesque trip down the Missouri River in central Montana, Marisa Luft '25 says, "This is what I want to do for the rest of my life." Luft was part of a group from all over the country who worked with Professors Ray Rogers and Kristi Curry Rogers on a Keck Gateway project that focused on the paleoecology and preservation of fossils from Montana. Students spent several weeks studying fossils in the lab before making the trek to Montana to find them in the field. "This work helps us understand ancient ecosystems," says Rogers. "It helps us understand the diversity of the past and is also a perfect learning space for students to get access to fossils, learn how to describe and interpret fossils, and how to understand what fossils tell us."
