Robert Smith and David Rubenstein about business and market economy at YES 2019

Two of the world's most successful investors, Robert Smith, the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, and David Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Chairman of The Carlyle Group, shared the sentiment that wealth does not guarantee happiness. Rubenstein expressed his belief that happiness depends on the ability of a person to share with others what they hold most precious. He recalled the moment that his own mother called him to show her pride in what he was doing, which only happened after he began to share his wealth with others.

Smith's view coincided with his counterpart's, saying that people who earn large sums of money often lack a sense of purpose until they create happiness for their communities. He believes that it is a fundamental element of global citizenship, where each individual is responsible for many people that they will never meet, since they all live in the same society. Smith also called for infrastructures to be created that allowed women to reach the same heights in business as men.

Both speakers agreed that the essence of philanthropy lies in investing in the future of others through worthwhile causes, not simply donating sums of money.
