Being one of the more interesting teams in the 2021 NBA draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder selected 6’8 Australian point guard Josh Giddey with 6th overall pick, 6’5 Florida guard Tre Mann with the 18th pick, 6’9 Villanova forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl with the 32nd pick and 6’6 Maryland wing Aaron Wiggins with the 55th pick. Ultimately, Thunder GM Sam Presti still has a stockpile of picks until the year 2027 despite trading the 16th pick of the draft Alperen Sengun to the Houston Rockets in exchange for 2 future first rounders. The selection of Josh Giddey 6th overall by the Okc Thunder had a lot of people surprised. Despite Giddey being a projected lottery pick, not a lot of fans expected the Thunder to pick him ahead of guys like Jonathan Kuminga or James Bouknight. Giddey played one season for the Adelaide 36ers of the Australian NBL where he won rookie of the year, averaging 10.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg, and 7.5 apg, while also being the youngest player in the NBL’s history to have back to back triple doubles. On the other hand, Tre Mann also had an outstanding sophomore season in Florida as the scoring combo guard put up 16 points per game on a highly efficient 40.2 percent from the three-point line. Mann is considered to be one of the best scorers and shooters in the 2021 NBA draft as well. So, will be the OKC Thunder’s 2021 draft selections pan out to be a steady part of their future, together with current team star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, Aleksej Pokusevski, Darius Bazley, Theo Maledon and their other core pieces? Will Josh Giddey and SGA become one of the best backcourts in the NBA? The Thunder failed to trade up in the draft to potentially acquire guys like Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, or Scottie Barnes, but did they really draft legitimate franchise cornerstones in Josh Giddey and Tre Mann?
