Lane Johnson explains why showing your hands is getting OL beat in pass protection. #offensiveline

Most offensive linemen are taught to have a visible hand carriage and 2-hand-strike, which shows their hands to defenders the entire time.

The problem is, defenders are being taught and trained to chop, swipe, and clear visible hands.

Lane Johnson shared a lesson early in his NFL career that changed everything. When Jeff Stoutland studied the greats, Walter Jones, Anthony Muñoz, and others, one thing stood out:

Their hands weren’t out in front of them, begging to manipulated.

They were patient.

Most pass rush drills teach defenders to attack hands. Swipe them. Chop them. Clear them. If you’re constantly showing your hands, you’re giving rushers exactly what they’re looking for.

Patience doesn’t mean passive. It means forcing the defender to declare first.

Tight elbows. Strong posture. Independent hands. Then strike with intent.

The difference between surviving in pass protection and dominating it often comes down to what YOU DO NOT PRESENT to the defender.
