Molecular Rock vs Coronavirus
Here is Mark Temple's "Biological Exploding RNA Sequence Inevitable" recorded Live at City Recital Hall (April 2021). This was part of an Inspiring Australia 'This Sounds Like Science' event that presents science and music on a different level.
As a scientist, Mark began turning the Coronavirus genes into audio by assigning each genetic letter contained within SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, to a computer generated musical note. The resulting compositions provides up to two hours of repetitive melodic sequences that sonically represent all of the Coronavirus genes. “The science audio in itself, while rhythmic and melodic, was not very musical since it lacked any arrangement into song structures. So, I invited other musicians to respond to this sequence of notes in a musical way, without paying heed to the science.”
When addressed as an element in music-making, the SARS-CoV-2 sonification becomes a voice to which other instruments are added. The result is a series of new compositions that can best be described as scientifically informed.
Joining Mark on stage were the illustrious “Biological Exploding RNA Sequence Inevitable”, who are an unusual combination of talented independent musicians and university academics.
Peter Veliks - Guitar and devices. Music producer and multi-instrumentalist.
Matthew Tow - Guitars. Singer-songwriter of Drop City and neo-psychedelic rockers the Lovetones.
Paul Scott - Bass. Singer, songwriter and pop luminary from Montana and Pop Mechanix.
Tim Byron - Keyboards. Music writer and academic from School of Psychology (UOW).
Mike Bain - Synthesizer. Academic from School of Computer Science and Engineering (UNSW).
Mike Anderson - Guitar. Lead instrumental of surf twang band Los Monaros.
Mark Temple - Drums. Academic from School of Science (WSU), member of the Hummingbirds.
Coronavirus Genome - Tone-Synth. Audio derived from biological sequence information.
