the Bhagavad Gita | Lord Krishna | speaks to | Arjuna | primarily about his duty (dharma) as a warrior and the nature of righteous action, especially in the context of war.
The conversation takes place on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, just before a massive war is about to begin between the Pandavas (Arjuna's side) and the Kauravas. At that moment, Arjuna becomes overwhelmed with sorrow and moral confusion. He sees his own relatives, teachers, and friends on both sides, and he is struck with deep compassion and doubt about the righteousness of the war. He puts down his bow and refuses to fight.
Krishna then counsels Arjuna in the following key ways:
1. Do Your Duty Without Attachment (Karma Yoga)
Krishna tells Arjuna that as a Kshatriya (warrior class), it is his swadharma (personal duty) to fight for justice. Avoiding the battle would be abandoning his responsibility.
“You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions.”
— Bhagavad Gita 2.47
2. Soul Is Eternal (Jnana Yoga)
Krishna explains that the soul (atman) is eternal and cannot be destroyed. The physical bodies will perish, but the soul continues.
“The soul is neither born, and nor does it die.”
— Bhagavad Gita 2.20
3. Act Without Desire for Results (Nishkama Karma)
Arjuna is encouraged to act selflessly, without attachment to success or failure. This attitude leads to spiritual liberation.
4. Divine Will and Surrender (Bhakti Yoga)
Krishna also reveals his divine form and encourages Arjuna to surrender completely to him.
“Abandon all varieties of dharma and simply surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions; do not fear.”
— Bhagavad Gita 18.66
