STORYLINE:
Smoke was seen rising over Gaza City from southern Israel on Tuesday.

Palestinian residents have reported heavy strikes across Gaza City and Israel's defense minister has said "Gaza is burning."

Israeli strikes in Gaza City overnight and into Tuesday have killed at least 34 Palestinians and wounded dozens, according to the city's Shifa hospital.

The Israeli military began a ground offensive targeting the area on Tuesday, slowly squeezing in on the Palestinian territory’s largest city that has seen block after block already destroyed in the Israel-Hamas war.

An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with military guidelines, said that the “main phase” of the Gaza City operation had begun.

Airstrikes have pounded Gaza City for some time in the leadup to the operation, knocking down towers in the city.

The war between Israel and Hamas started following the Hamas-led Oct. 7 2023 attack which killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and led to the abduction of 251.

Israel’s ensuing offensives in Gaza have killed more than 64,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were civilians or combatants. It says around half of those killed were women and children.
