Liberec: The meter-gauge suburban line to Jablonec | Trams in the Czech Republic - Episode 2 | 2021

The city of Liberec, located in the north of the Czech Republic, built its first meter-gauge tram line in 1897. A big expansion was made by opening a 12,5-kilometer suburban line to Jablonec in 1958. While the inner-city lines were converted to standard-gauge in the 1990s, the suburban line 11 continued to be operated on meter-gauge tracks. This cumbersome temporary arrangement finally ended on July 18th, 2021 with the temporary closure of line 11. In 2022, the whole line will resume its operation on new standard-gauge tracks.

In this video we will be following the tram line 11 through the idyllic "Nisou" valley, just a few days before its closure. Large parts of the route pass through small villages and forests. The rolling stock consisted solely of Tatra T3 cars, which were often used as double-sets. Some of the cars were equipped with a low-floor section.
