Погружение во вселенную Киберпанк 2077 выполнено в научно-фантастическом сеттинге, где предстоит оказаться среди футуристического города будущего Найт-Сити. Главным героем становится человек по имени Ви, которого пользователь может полноценно кастомизировать, определившись с полом и внешностью. Протагонист оказывается втянут в наемную работу, где приходится работать на влиятельных людей. Исходя от выбранной предыстории и распределения характеристик персонажа, формируется уникальный пролог перед погружением в открытый мир.

Выжив после ранения, на биочипе оказывается личность местного повстанца и рок-идола Джонни Сильверхенда. Из-за инородного объекта в разуме героя, ему остается жить не долго и приходится срочно искать возможность избавиться от чипа. Джонни будет внедряться в сознание протагониста, оказывая влияние на его поступки и общаясь в виде голограммы. Каждое действие и решение геймеров оказывает влияние на развитие сюжета и финальную концовку игры.

The game is made in the genre of action-adventure role-playing, where the emphasis is on building your own story and leveling up your character. You will have to participate in the disassembly of influential organizations, fighting opponents with the help of technological equipment or firearms. The character is able to become a hacker, a melee fighter or a shooter, using implants to improve skills.

The storyline shows an attempt by V and his friend Jack to steal a biochip, which contains valuable information about the head of the Arasaka megacorporation. They witness the death of the leader Saburo Arasaki, who dies at the hands of Yorinobu's son. The plan changes completely when the fixer Dexter Deshon appears, which attacks the protagonist and leaves him to die. In order not to lose information, the hero inserts a chip into his head, hoping to save the data received.

Surviving after being wounded, the identity of a local rebel and rock idol Johnny Silverhand turns out to be on the biochip. Because of a foreign object in the mind of the hero, he does not have long to live and has to urgently look for an opportunity to get rid of the chip. Johnny will infiltrate the protagonist's consciousness, influencing his actions and communicating in the form of a hologram. Every action and decision of gamers has an impact on the development of the plot and the final ending of the game.
