The Story of Ruby McCollum Pt 1 - The Halo Effect Show w/Dedee Harper

On this powerful episode of The Halo Effect Show w/Dedee Harper "The Real Estate Angel," Dedee engages with Marcellus Womack in a moving convo about the story of Ruby McCollum who made national news in 1952 in Dedee's hometown of Live Oak, FL when she shot and murdered Dr. Leroy Adams, a well known white doctor and state senator elect, for continuously raping and impregnating her, a violation he was allowed to do under the paramour rights for white men during slavery and Jim Crow.

Dedee shares the details to Ruby's story, as her and husband ran a Bolita and were the wealthiest black family in Live Oak. After the murder, her husband allegedly died of a heart attack the next day (though it's suspected that he was killed by the KKK). During Ruby's court trial she was under a gag under where she couldn't tell the details of the relations and sexual assaults done to her by Dr. Leroy Adams. Her court trial and story was covered by famous black journalist and cultural anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston.

Ruby was sentenced to death, and served over 2 decades in jail before her appeal was granted and she was released, as the Paramour Law was also passed to prevent such sexual violations that she had to endure. She went into a state mental hospital, and was released but never spoke about the event again up until her death at the age of 82.
