WNPS Public Lecture: Managing Human-Wildlife Conflict Involving Iconic Species By Dr Desley Whisson
WNPS Public Lecture July 15, 2021
Natural, uncontrolled increase of species abundance in the wild, can lead to adverse impacts on not only natural ecosystems and biodiversity but even on human health and livelihoods. It can also be the cause of human-wildlife conflict.
Managing human-wildlife conflict is especially challenging when the species at the centre of the conflict is iconic. In Australia, the iconic Koala presents significant management challenges. Although populations are declining throughout much of its range, in some parts of the country, Koala populations can reach high, unsustainable densities.
Australian ecologist - Dr Desley Whisson, who will discuss the challenges of managing iconic species, using the Koala as a case study. She will discuss the pros and cons of translocation and fertility control as a species management tool, and the need for proactive and scientifically-based management strategies.
Dr Desley Whisson is a terrestrial wildlife ecologist and Senior Lecturer in Wildlife and Conservation Biology at Australia's Deakin University. Her research helps wildlife species management, particularly with species involved in Human-Wildlife Conflict. She has conducted research in Mexico, North America, and Australia. Desley has published over 80 scientific papers, a book and several book chapters, and serves on several expert panels advising the government on Koala management.
The WNPS Public Lecture series is hosted in collaboration with our longtime sponsor – Nations Trust Bank (NTB).
