While waiting for our train in the New York City subway, a woman gently tapped me on the shoulder and politely asked if she could take a picture of Fidget because Shelties are her favorite breed. The entire interaction was kind, respectful, and honestly refreshing.

She spoke to me, the handler, instead of trying to get my service dog’s attention. She asked for permission before taking a photo. She respected his space and treated us like people first.

Unfortunately, that’s not always how public interactions go. So many people talk directly to the dog, make noises at them, or take photos without asking. That’s why this interaction stood out so much.
