How Do You Launch a Nuclear Strike?

How does the US President order a nuclear strike and what does it have to do with a biscuit?

The Sitting President has sole authority to authorise a nuclear strike. Technically no one can deny the order although in practice some may refuse.

The process will start with a meeting involving the Pentagon’s deputy director of operations and the Head of US Strategic Command as well as some other choice advisers. They may try to talk him out of it but they don’t have the authority to stop the process. This meeting could last just a matter of seconds.

The President will then officially give the order to fire the nukes. This begins with the biscuit and not the Oreo kind but instead a small card. A pentagon war room officer will read out a challenge code consisting of the likes of Romeo Tango, this will correspond to a response on the biscuit such as Foxtrot Charlie.

Now the launch order has been officially given and verified. The war room will now relay the details of the launch including the codes required to unlock the missiles for use.

A sub team and 5 ICBM Bunker Crews will now verify this order against a set of sealed codes stored in a safe. Upon verifying the validity of the order they will unlock the missiles.

At a specific time given by the War room transmission, these ICBM bunker crews will simultaneously turn a launch key, only 2 of these crews need to comply with the order for the nukes to be launched.

Nuclear subs on the other hand have sole authority to launch and do not rely on any other crews to turn a key.

This whole process may have only lasted 5 minutes. The nukes are now launching or already in the air depending as nukes launched from subs take longer to be airborne. Once these nukes are launched they cannot be recalled.
