$32,000 Worth of Leather Bracelets

Japanese leather artisans were the reason I got into leatherwork in 2008. I spent hours looking at Redmoon and KC's wallets in magazines I had to proxy from Japan, because they weren't available anywhere online. I couldn't afford to buy one as a college student - so I made my own with very vague reverse-engineered drawings of wallets I'd cut out of Japanese magazines. Who knew that project would lead me into the best career I could ever imagine?

When the tsunami hit after the earthquake in 2011, I was in my early 20's working out of my bedroom right after college. I didn't have much money but I knew I could help in some way, so I decided to make a simple bracelet representing the Japanese Flag to sell on my bare-bones website. With the help of friends and roomates we made over 2,000 bracelets and shipped them all over the world in just 3 weeks. We raised a whole bunch of money to help our friends that had inspired me so much!

District Leather Supply sent over some Japanese leather for us to try out, which has been notoriously hard to get in the US. I thought it'd be a great opportunity to finally make a version of the American Flag design I've had for a while now. This american flag bifold wallet is made with Tochigi leather and Vinymo thread, with Columbus edge wax - all from Japan! It's so rad to be able to get Japanese materials in the US now, a huge thank you to District for letting us check out some of the materials they carry. My wallet is not psyched for the amount of spending that's going to happen trying out all the cool tools and materials that are now easily available for us leather workers in the states and beyond.
