Astra H 1.7 CDTI Z17DTH - Bad Turbo Core Sound - Read Description
Turns out the new Chinese turbo core was not the correct dimensions and so something was interfering inside. I put the old worn out one back in and it was fine from then on.
I'm aware this sounds a lot like when a boost hose isn't done up properly but it made this noise even with no pipes attached to the turbo on either side.
