When I asked the aesthetician what she recommend for hyperpigmentation and one ingredient she mentioned was retinol. Retinol is a topical vitamin A-based ingredient and is NOT to be confused with skin bleach. Retinol has it’s benefits but there is some controversy with using Retinol/ retinoid specifically because it makes your skin hypersensitive to sunlight. If you are considering using retinol to reduce hyperpigmentation or fine lines please consult your doctor before using any retinol products.

Pros for using retinol:

Increases collagen production
Reduces hyperpigmentation
Reduces fine lines / wrinkles
Stimulates the production of new blood cells
Improves elasticity in the skin

Cons of Retinol:

May experience dryness or irritation (especially with a high percentage)

Makes the skin sensitive to sunlight ( exposure to the sun may cause skin cancer)
