FIFA is testing a new offside rule in Ottawa this season

Atletico Ottawa and the Canadian Premier League have been chosen by FIFA to trial a new version of the offside rule this season, ahead of the FIFA World Cup coming to Canada this summer. CTV's Dylan Dyson reports that under the new rule, an attacking player's entire body must be past the second-to-last defender to be called offside, rather than any part of the body used to score, creating a visible gap of daylight between attacker and defender. Drew Beckie, assistant coach and head of football development at Atletico Ottawa, says the trial gives the Canadian Premier League important visibility at a critical moment for soccer in Canada. Players Manuel Aparicio and Noah Abatneh both reacted to the change, with Aparicio saying it is exciting to see a potential rule change originate in the CPL. General manager of Atletico Ottawa Juniors Pavel Cancura notes the change will also affect how young players learn the game.
