Lee Trevino: An American Champion

This documentary details Lee Trevino's victory in the 1971 U.S. Open Championship at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., and his unusual journey to the top of the game. Trevino, a fan favorite, defeated Jack Nicklaus in an 18-hole playoff to win his second U.S. Open title. Trevino overcame a four-stroke deficit entering the final round to force the playoff, which is famously remembered for Trevino breaking the ice beforehand with a rubber snake.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) conducts many of golf's most prestigious championships, highlighted by the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women's Open and the world’s premier amateur championships. Based in Liberty Corner, N.J., the USGA governs the game in the U.S., its territories and Mexico.
