CASEL CARES: Helping Children and Families Manage Stress & Build Resilience with Dr. Bruce Perry
CASEL CARES is an initiative that connects our community with experts to address how SEL can be most helpful in response to today’s circumstances. This webinar offers strategies for how educators/parents/families can structure their day, work towards more meaningful interactions, be conscious of and work towards better self-regulation, and other similar points that will positively impact a child’s experience and relationship with them. Featuring Dr. Bruce Perry
Key Takeaways:
• Self-regulation and relationships (two key SEL competencies) are key waystations on the highway to the brain’s cortex, where cognitive learning happens. If these routes are blocked, the cortex freezes and no learning occurs.
• Adult SEL and self-care are critical, especially during this pandemic.
• Dosing and spacing instruction is critical during stressful times…with small student groups (4-5), small doses of instruction (8-10 minutes), and many short transitions, especially for students who are likely to start the day stressed.
