Seattle's Decay

If you saw "Seattle is Dying" or "The Fight for the Soul of Seattle" you will love this video. Anyone visiting Seattle will start to notice the decay. This is particularly true if you haven't been to Seattle recently. The contrast is dramatic. Expanding drug addict / "homeless" camps. Garbage and graffiti covering many surfaces. Boarded up businesses covering broken windows. These are just a few videos I took a few weeks ago when I was driving around Seattle.

One of the finest documentaries on modern Seattle, done by Eric Johnson, “The Fight for the Soul of Seattle” examines the role of Seattle’s City Council in allowing the situation to reach what many experts consider epidemic levels under the guise of a compassionate approach to people who suffer from substance addiction and who commit crimes to feed their habit.

It documents the heartbreaking condition of people on the streets, and the crushing decisions Seattle entrepreneurs are forced to contemplate as their life savings and dreams are destroyed by theft, vandalism and a dwindling customer base. This documentary also explores potential bold solutions to treat those living on the streets and pair them with agencies and assistance that can provide a clear path away from the endless circle of addiction and crime.

It didn't matter whether it was Capital Hill, Ballard, Fremont, Capital Hill, Lake Union, near Pike Place Market, or SoDo area - the Seattle decay is spreading.

Of course, what happens in Seattle never stays in Seattle

It is spreading to other cities like Olympia, Bellingham, Everett, Vancouver, Spokane, and others. Billions of dollars are being dumped into "solving" the homeless/drug addiction problem, but the problem is only growing. The government grant cash is acting like fertilizer, helping to establish the Homeless Industrial Complex. The problem is not getting better.

There is a tendency with the current bureaucracy and political leadership which has become fossilized in Seattle and Olympia to just pretend the problem is "not that bad" or "manageable" or to shift the blame to the old favorite - "not enough money" or "we need another program" or "everyone is racist" or some other excuse pulled from the pages of the latest "non-profit" grant application wordsmithing.

At some point, serious political leadership will need to do something to change how we are letting Seattle decay right now. Until then, this is a trend that is not getting better. It is important to recognize the problem, because denial is dominant in the local political world.

For those who haven't already seen Eric Johnson's "Seattle is Dying" documentary from KOMO you can see it here:

The blowback from the political establishment to this video was interesting both in its tendency to deny the problem and to primarily respond to the problem by just dumping more grant cash on the problem.

This guy made a video about the top 10 reasons not to live in Seattle, the Homeless/Junkie camps was #10, but a large share of the other items in the list were relevant to this issue as well:
