About King Cobra [Ophiophagus hannah (Cantor, 1836)]

It is the largest venomous snake in the world. It lies in family Elapidae. King Cobra is called राज गोमन, नागराजा, दराद, कालीनाग अलहाद, अलाद, केंवटा, भैंसे डोम in Nepali.
Head not very distinct from the neck, dilatable: eye moderate,, pupil round: nostril between an anterior and a posterior nasal; frontal not truncate anteriorly. Dorsal surface brown, yellowish-brown, blackish brown, black, light green, green-grey, olive, olive green, olive-brown, orange-yellow with or without yellowish or white crossbars or chevrons. Ventral surface whitish white or greyish brown. It is carnivorous, exclusively snakes and cannibalism. It prefers moist temperate forest; inhabits tropical and subtropical wet forests, plantations, and open scrublands in the vicinity of water bodies. It is oviparous, mating between January to May. The female builds the nest and incubates the clutch. Incubation periods were of about 80 days. The eggs were of 20-51 in number. In captivity, its life span was 14 years.

It is widespread throughout South and Southeast Asia and reported from Bali, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Borneo, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Java, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Thailand, and Vietnam King Cobra is a globally threatened snake species and has been categorized as Vulnerable in IUCN Red List of threatened species (2018) and listed in Appendix II of Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES)
