Rome Executed a General for Winning Too Easily — The Senate Called It Suspicious

Gnaeus Manlius Vulso returned from Asia Minor in 187 BC loaded with treasure and a decisive military victory. The Senate refused him a triumph. Then they prosecuted him. His crime: winning without authorization and introducing luxurious eastern goods into Rome that would corrupt Roman virtue. The charge was real. Silk, gold furniture, and female musicians entered Rome in his baggage train. He was fined and shamed. Rome's generals were expected to win, yes — but not too much, not too fast, and definitely not while enjoying it. The Republic punished success it hadn't ordered.
