Surron Big Wheels | The Enduro Killer Upgrade
This time I'm testing what I call the "enduro wheels". It's a 21" front wheel complemented by an 18" rear. This setup is is high demand as it has some interesting characteristics to offer:
- the rear wheel offers a lot of traction and dampening,
- the front wheel helps rolling over stuff and gnarly terrains.
The front wheel is bigger, it rolls over rocks, logs and roots effortlessly, so it really helps on these rougher terrains and gnarly rides.
Regarding the rear wheel, the 18" tyre is larger and bigger, with a huge air volume. So it provides a lot of cushion and allows you to ride fast even over a terrain covered with rocks. In addition, as it's wider than stock, it has a bigger contact surface and provides a lot of traction, offering new climbing abilities.
Moreover, the rear tyre is capable of transmitting more torque and power to the ground and is particularly adapted to those with powerful bikes.
As a side note, the 21" rises the bike so it can be an advantage for taller riders that can benefit from a bigger bike.
On the other hand, this setup is heavier and makes the bike less agile, albeit more stable, than with the 19" wheels. The wheels also require more power to get moving and logically deplete the battery slightly faster.
As with everything, it's a matter of compromise: nothing comes for free. It's also perfectly possible to opt for the 21" front while keeping a 19" rear. That's exactly what Cyprien has been riding with for a year already.
TECHNICAL INFO
The rear tyre is a CST C-755 3.5-18 and the front is a Maxxis 7311 80/100-21
