We were on a short break up on the Scottish borders and stopped off at Norham Castle to have a look about. According to the information sign, this was 'the most dangerous place in England'. I am unsure if it was dangerous for the English or for the Scots.

In 1292 Edward I of England chose John Baliol to be King of Scotland at nearby Berwick castle but it was at Norham Castle that Baliol was to pay homage to Edward, 3 days after becoming King of Scotland. Later it took Robert the Bruce four attempts to take the castle.

There was nobody about and we had the place to ourselves. However, the changeable weather meant my family made a hasty retreat to the car during the heaviest of the fleeting showers. Although my daughter later returned with me to have a look around the keep before we headed to the nearby bee farm for a bit of cake and a cup of tea.
