During a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on Tuesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) asked EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin about a meeting he had with Bayer's CEO. Pressing for clarity, AOC pointed to internal emails and regulatory actions that she suggested could intersect with ongoing legal battles involving the company.

Highlighting the stakes, Ocasio-Cortez said, “Glyphosate is internationally recognized as likely carcinogenic to humans, with particular links to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.” She noted that “tens of thousands of lawsuits… have been filed against Bayer for failing to warn about the cancer risk of exposure.”

She also referenced policy decisions, stating, “President Trump released an executive order to increase the production of glyphosate in the United States,” adding that it “called for legal immunity for Bayer from tens of thousands of Americans seeking justice.”

Citing internal EPA communications, AOC pressed further: “We have internal emails… saying Bayer was specifically seeking and discussing Supreme Court action.” She alleged that the company “wanted to thank your agency for removing support for California’s cancer warning,” arguing that “their case before the Supreme Court hinges on you not warning the American people.”

In a pointed moment, she asked Zeldin directly: “Do you understand the conflict of interest that is before the American people right now?” Zeldin denied any wrongdoing, responding that his meeting with Bayer was brief and did not involve legal discussions, and emphasized that the EPA is currently conducting an assessment on glyphosate expected in 2026.

The exchange underscores growing scrutiny over environmental policy, corporate influence, and public health as lawmakers debate regulation and accountability.
