Hydrocephalus is the buildup of excess fluid within the brain. It is a life-threatening condition that mainly affects infants and is seen in 50% of premature babies. It has 3 major causes: 1. Overproduction of Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), 2. Blockage of fluid flow, 3. Decreased absorption of the fluid. Dr. Sanjeev Bassi, Consultant Neurosurgeon at King’s college Hospital Dubai explains the condition and it’s treatment which is the division of the fluid from the brain to another part of the body, and is mainly done by a surgical insertion of a drainage system, called a shunt.
