We’re creating a course on the Socratica High YouTube channel on The Odyssey by Homer.

The Odyssey is the story of Odysseus finding his way back home to Ithaca. This is not the only story of its kind, although it is probably the most famous and long-lived.
A story of homecoming, especially after a war, was called NOSTOS in ancient Greek literature. Collectively, these kinds of stories were called the NOSTOI.
Odysseus faces many trials and tribulations on his way home to Ithaca, and how he demonstrates his perseverance and honor establish his character in this work.
It's quite different from the other epic story by Homer, the Iliad, where Odysseus develops a reputation for a strong and clever warrior. The Iliad is an example of another kind of epic saga, a KLEOS story.
In this short, we consider what lets you know you're talking about NOSTOS or KLEOS when you're reading a story or watching a movie.

We’ll spend the first six months of the year reading and writing about this epic saga. This course will meet the Common Core standards for ELA (English Language Arts), focusing on close reading and writing about Homer’s saga. We’re using the Penguin Classics edition translated by Robert Fagles.
