Israeli tanks massed on border with Lebanon

Israeli forces on Monday (10/7) reinforced their presence in their
narrow self-declared "security zone" just inside Lebanon, a day
after 27 Katyusha rockets fired by Lebanon-based guerrillas landed
near the Israeli border towns of Kiryat Shmona and Nahariya. The
Islamic Hezbollah, or Party of God, claimed responsibility for the
attack - in apparent retaliation for the deaths of two Lebanese
sisters, aged 12 and 19, who were killed during an Israeli
shelling of a South Lebanese town on Saturday night. The Hezbollah
rockets landed in open country causing brush fires but no
casualties. North of the main town of Kiryat Shmona, Israeli tanks
and artillery pieces were unloaded from transporters and proceeded
into Lebanon. The weekend attacks were the latest in a series of
violations of agreements reached by Israel and Hezbollah in the
summer of 1993 - both sides had pledged that they would refrain
from attacking civilian targets.
