He drew 17,897 strips himself — he died the night the last one ran #CharlesSchulz #love #devotion

Charles Schulz was 50 in 1972 when he met Jean Forsyth at a Santa Rosa ice arena in Northern California. He was the creator of Peanuts. Charlie Brown. Snoopy. The most-read comic strip on earth. He was divorced from his first wife after 23 years.

Jean ran the ice rink. She was 33. She had two daughters.

They married on September 22, 1973.

For 27 years she protected his quiet. He drew every Peanuts strip himself for 50 years. 17,897 strips. He never let an assistant draw a line. He worked from a small studio in Santa Rosa. He never moved to Los Angeles.

In November 1999, doctors found colon cancer. The cancer spread to his stomach.

On December 14, 1999, Charles announced he would retire. He drew his final daily strip in January 2000. He signed the final Sunday strip with a trembling hand.

He died on February 12, 2000, at 77. Jean was beside him.

The final Sunday Peanuts ran in newspapers the next morning.

Was she his wife — or the last panel he never got to read?
