Prvobitni plan Vojske Srbije sa početka 21. veka bio je da se deo mehanizovanih bataljona koja koriste borbena vozila pešadije guseničare BVP M-80 preoruža borbenim vozilima pešadije na točkovima. Prema najavama iz Jugoimporta radi se na ugradnji topova kalibra 30, 40 i 57 milimetara na Lazara što će bitno ojačati njegove borbene sposobnosti.
