Mega Man 3 (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Capcom's 1990 NES game, Mega Man 3.

The third outing for the Blue Bomber blows away his first adventure, offers a fair amount of improvement and innovation over the already excellent second game, and avoids the generic rehashing of later titles, making Mega Man 3 the best entry in the original series (and only really rivaled later by the fantastic Mega Man X for the SNES).

I might have a bit of an unfair slant toward this one (though I think my opinion still carries a lot of truth to it) because it was the first Mega Man game that I owned - not the first I played, but the first I ever had to call my own. The game was brand new - it didn't even have its cover on Nintendo Power yet, and thus I didn't know it existed, until my dad came home with it. He went the Exchange to pick up some stuff for my mom on his was home from work and saw this on the shelf. He thought I'd like it since we'd rented the first Mega Man so many times before.

I believe that's the moment I thought my dad had some sort of psychic power. And I don't think I've ever said thank you quite so many times as I did in the two-minutes following him pulling it out of his briefcase and handing it to me. No matter how good X and X4 were, nothing in the series for me ever topped this one.

That being said, if it looks like I'm good at this one, it's because I've got 25 years worth of playing it under my belt. Sorry if that sounds inappropriately immodest. I believe the first time I ever beat it without dying was close to Christmas of that year, and it became so ingrained in my mind that no matter how much time passes, all I need is five minutes with the controller and it all comes flooding right back.

My sister is thankful that she no longer has to hold down the left-button on the second controller like she did in my super intense weeks of playing this one. She was only five at the time, and loved "playing" games with her big brother - little siblings are far too trusting. I think that probably the only other game I know as well as Mega Man 3 is the original Super Mario Bros. They were both pretty formative experiences in shaping my tastes.

Mega Man 3 is quite a bit longer than the first two games, and offers a new set of substages, featuring the bosses from 2, after the first eight robots are defeated. He's also got quite a few novel powerups, a slide maneuver, and one of the best eight-bit soundtracks ever composed. There aren't many games on the old NES that I used to turn on and walk away from just so I could hear the title screen music on an endless loop.

The Japanese PS1 remake of this game also has some killer remixes of an already amazing soundtrack. If you like the music in this game, be sure to check that one out.
