COVID-19 "Long-Haulers": Persistent Symptoms after COVID-19 Infection
This article published in one of America’s most prestigious medical journals, JAMA, looks at a group of patients admitted to the hospital in Italy, and after discharge how long they had persistent symptoms. This is important to me because I have been seeing a group of patients with ongoing symptoms after infection and I have not had the best guidance to give them as far a how long they can expect symptoms.
I do not want to skip the fact that this group was a sick group. They were admitted to the hospital for an average of 2 weeks and 73% had a viral pneumonia. At two months, when this survey was filled out, 55% still had symptoms the most common of which were fatigue, dyspnea, joint pain,
chest pain and cough.
We must not forget with this study that roughly 50% who get this infection will have no symptoms whatsoever (up to 80% in children). Of those who get this and have symptoms, only 15% will need medical care and only 5% go to the hospital. So, those falling into this "long-hauler" category are in a select group.
On the upside, N-Acetyl-Cysteine has anecdotally been used to treat the post-infectious symptoms of COVID-19 with success. So, even those with lingering symptoms have something they can do to help alleviate their symptoms.
