Breakthrough ceremony of 19.2km Qamchiq Tunnel in Uzbekistan

China Railway Tunnel Group finished construction of the Qamchiq Tunnel, the longest in Central Aisa, on the Uzbekistan Angren-Pap railway line in Uzbekistan on Saturday.

The Chinese company took only 900 days to complete the 19.26-kilometer-long tunnel, which is the largest cooperation project between Uzbekistan and China. The construction cost was about 450 million U.S. dollars.

Representatives from both sides gathered near the tunnel on Saturday morning for a breakthrough ceremony. They pushed a button that set off the final explosion to finish the tunnel and shortly after a line of cars became the first to pass through the new tunnel.

The Qamchiq Tunnel is expected to promote political, economic and social development in Uzbekistan, and deepen cooperation between the two countries. It also marks another important step forward for the "Belt and Road" initiative.
