Sitar player Pt. Kushal Das and Tabla player Ustaad Akram Khan in Delhi

India's famous Tabla player Ustaad Akram Khan and Sitar player Pt. Kushal Das perform at a musical festival in honour of Ustaad Hashmat Ali Khan in Delhi.

Ustad Akram Khan is arguably the finest contemporary performer of tabla from the famous Ajrada Gharana. He received his initial training in music from Late Ustad Niazu Khan who was famous for his technical style and guidance. He is also fortunate to have learnt from his great grandfather, Ustad Mohammed Shafi Khan. He continues his riyaz and training under the able guidance of his father Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan. He has also undergone formal training at the Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad from where he passed Sangeet Praveen (Master of Music) and also from Chandigarh from where he received Sangeet Visharad. He also has a Bachelors Degree in Commerce. Ustad Akram Khan started performing in music conferences at a very young age. Since then, he has been participating in prestigious festivals in India and across the globe accompanying many top artists. In 1987, he performed with Ustad Vilayat Khan in Japan, and in 1992 he accompanied the maestro to the United States. He has performed before enthralled audiences at the Kennedy Centre and the Lincoln Centre in the USA. He was part of the celebrations for the 50 years of India’s Independence in India, as well as abroad. In 1992, the President of India, Shri R Venkataraman applauded and praised him for his remarkable support at a recital at the President ‘s House. In 1993, he was appointed visiting professor at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has been participating regularly in the National Programme of Music and Annual Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan of All India Radio, a festival of great repute at the national level. He has the distinction of having provided tabla accompaniment to some of the legendary maestros in the world of Indian Classical Music. He is a Top Grade Artist of All India Radio and has been playing regularly for All India Radio since his childhood. The quality of Ustad Akram Khan’s performance has won him a respectable place in the music world as a soloist and accompanist. His performances are highly appreciated and acknowledged by his admirers and critics alike.

Kushal Das, a north Indian solo sitarist was born to a highly enriched musical family of Calcutta. His grandfather Late Bimal Ch. Das was a renowned Esraj player while his father Shri Sailen Das and uncle Sri Santanu Das are sitarists of high repute.

Kushal started his talim from the age of seven. He received intensive and rigorous training in advanced sitar techniques and the art of music making under the affectionate guidance of Prof. Sanjoy Bandopadhyay, the renowned sitar maestro and academician. He also had the proud privilege of having learnt from great musicians like, Pt. Manas Chakraborty, Pt. Ramkrishna Basu and Late Pt. Ajoy Sinha Roy.

With a profound knowledge of musical understanding and raga improvisation Kushal is now considered as one of the foremost torchbearers of the tradition of Indian classical Instrumental Music.

The critics and connoisseurs have acknowledged him as a worthy successor of his idol, the legendary maestro Late Pandit Nikhil Bandyopadhyay.

His concerts are always marked for their aesthetic appeal and insight with a fine command of technical expertise. With maturity as his forte Kushal thus have the predominant virtues of Indian heritage and music.
An “A” grade musician of All India Radio and Television, he is a recipient of Sangeet Visharad from Pracheen Kala Kendra-of Chandigarh and Sur-Mani form Sur Singar Samsad of Mumbai.
