The session explains how Harihara and Bukka established Vijayanagar in 1336, why the Raichur Doab became the centre of a 300-year struggle, and how the Battle of Talikota weakened the empire and paved the way for regional political shifts. The lecture further explores the early phase of Mysore’s history, the administrative dominance of Devaraj and Nanjaraj, the continued Maratha pressure, and the dramatic rise of Haider Ali—an illiterate but brilliant cavalry soldier who later transformed Mysore’s military power. It also introduces the role of Tipu Sultan and sets the stage for the Anglo-Mysore Wars. This session offers a clear, UPSC-oriented understanding of medieval South Indian history, crucial for both Prelims and Mains.
