General Bipin Rawat – India’s First CDS and Visionary Military Reformer

General Bipin Rawat (16 March 1958 – 8 December 2021) was an illustrious Indian military officer who served as the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces from January 2020 until his tragic passing. A decorated four-star general, he previously served as the 27th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), spearheading path-breaking initiatives to modernize India's military structure.
Known as a "soldier's soldier" and a proponent of self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar Bharat), General Rawat was instrumental in initiating theater commands to enhance joint operational synergy among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Throughout his four-decade career, he was deeply involved in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast, commanding troops at various levels before becoming the principal military advisor to the government. His legacy as a decisive leader and strategic thinker continues to shape India’s defense policies.
Key Aspects of His Legacy
First CDS: As the first Chief of Defence Staff, he brought "jointness" to the three services, aiming for a unified theatre command structure.
Military Modernisation: He advocated for indigenous defence production, prioritizing the 2015 Myanmar strikes and planning the 2016 surgical strikes.
Awards: He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan (posthumous, 2022), Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), and many other distinguished honours.
Tragic Passing: He lost his life in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, on December 8, 2021, along with his wife, Madhulika Rawat, and 12 other personnel.
