Heaves/COPD in 17 yr old Horse

A 17 yr. Lippit Morgan horse gelding with heaves or COPD. Our farm is located in Collinsville, AL. Pollen is abundant and the season is late March into the first week of April. From cough to rapid weight loss and heaves. This is a horse who is normally an easy keeper and never under weight. The change in rigor occurred abruptly with just 2 months. Veterinarian treatments underway and a significant change after just one day of treatment.

The rapid weight loss is do to the amount of energy exerted breathing with complications. Environmental conditions are currently high pollen and all of our horses live outside in paddocks. Changes we are making are to move the horse out onto grass pasture.
