OY Rotary Snowplow Part 11: Cumbres Pass -- Top of the Mountain

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad’s OY special reaches Cumbres Pass, a historic section point on the railroad 10,015 feet above sea level. Once the locomotives are watered, OY will push across Route 17 and into a pile of caked ice, piled high by the Colorado Department of Transportation. This evidently was a favorite place for snowplow crews to push snow and ice off the road. The obstacle proved to be insurmountable once it was determined the melting show had created rivers of ice that jammed the flanges. This ended the day about 1 mile short of the objective, Tanglefoot Curve. Although few would admit it, many event participants were exhausted and ready to return to Chama. One had to be evacuated due to shortness of breath at the high elevation. Some 150 railfans gathered in Chama to pay homage to the revered rotary, the first event of the year marking the 50th anniversary of C&TS and the 140th anniversary of the railroad itself, built and originally operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Western.
