The lesson begins with the verse. This is going to teach us the basic chord progressions and fingerpicking pattern used in this tune. It consists of two chord progressions: C, G/B, Am and G, Dm, Am.
We practice each progression separately, working on the simplest fingerings, and an effective way to transition between shapes that will help build your muscle memory. Then we apply our finger picking pattern to each of these.
We learn the pattern in steps, practicing it in small bits, and then we put it all together over a single chord shape. These are all really important steps, you know, if you just go and try to do the whole thing all at once, odds are you'll miss something. This way, we're going to cover every single base and practice every little component of this tune, so that when we do put it all together, it'll go smoothly.
Next we take a look at the chorus, which has a couple new chord shapes (D/F# and Am/G) but the fingerpicking is the same. We practice it the exact same way and then we move on to the intro.
Now this is actually the most interesting part of this tune because it uses a melodic pattern of three notes over a chord progression that goes in fours. This creates a four against three pattern that makes the intro end up looking like 16 random chord shapes. But in reality, there is a logical thread that ties it all together.
I want to show you, visually, how that all works out, so that when you go to play this you won't just have to memorize a bunch of random chord shapes, you'll actually understand why and how to put together the whole thing. This way, it ends up being two chords and three melody notes - that's how simple it can be.
Finally, we take a look at the bridge, which uses a couple of unique chord shapes. It's not too tricky as long as you curl your fingers to make sure they're not muting any of the adjacent strings. The finger picking pattern's the same.
Once we've practiced all four sections separately, we can put them all together, nice and slow. We have one final play along where we do that, we work on all the transitions from part to part, and we get it all together.
I know this complete practice guide is a long one but there is a lot to go over in this tune, and I wanted to make sure that I covered all our bases, so that you can finally put this one together once and for all.
I hope you enjoy the lesson. See you soon!
