The update from the CCRCGP on May 8, 2025, had the caption “The giant panda "Bai Yun" is leisurely munching on bamboo on her perch, just enjoying her time.”
Bai Yun, a female giant panda, studbook number 371, was born on September 7, 1991, at the Hetaoping Wild Training Base in China, alongside her twin sister, Lü Di. Her dad was the legendary panda Pan Pan, and her mom was Dong Dong.
Bai Yun’s birth was a big deal — she broke a 10-year dry spell at Wolong by being the first panda cub there to survive and go on to join the breeding program. Basically, she was a total game-changer.
On September 10, 1996, she flew to the San Diego Zoo with male panda Shi Shi (who later returned to China in 2003) and started her new chapter in the U.S.
Then, on May 16, 2019, after 23 years abroad, Bai Yun made her way back home to Sichuan — and this time, she brought along her youngest cub, Xiao Liwu (“Little Gift”), who was born in the U.S. It was Xiao Liwu’s very first time setting paw on his ancestral homeland.
