How Africa’s Great Green Wall Will Make the Sahel Green Again
Africa is building a Great Green Wall across the Sahel to hold back the advancing Sahara Desert. Will it succeed?
Just 8,000 years ago, the Sahara was a lush green landscape of lakes, rivers and wetlands. So, how did it turn into the inhospitable environment we know today – and how can we stop it from growing any further? Desertification is a major issue that affects drylands across the planet, including large parts of Africa, where it threatens food security and the livelihoods of millions of people. But local communities are taking control of their own fate by spearheading a massive landscape restoration project that aims to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land in the Sahel by 2030: the Great Green Wall Initiative.
