Island Peak (Imja Tse) can be climbed with the help of Sherpas, even by those who are not expert mountaineers. You can rent all necessary climbing gear—boots, helmet, crampons, harness, etc.—in Chukhung. The equipment is not hard to use, and you can learn everything in just an hour or two the day before the climb. The key challenge is altitude acclimatization.
The trip took place from late March to early April. We allocated three buffer days in case the weather turned bad, but we had good weather throughout the trek and got to enjoy some relaxed time in Kathmandu. In Kathmandu, we joined tours that visited UNESCO heritage sites and street foods—both were fantastic experiences.
We did the trek with a local Nepali travel agency called Ecological Treks, and everything was absolutely perfect. Highly recommended! Here is the agency's contact info:
