How Times Square is kicking off America’s 250th anniversary

Out with the old, and in with the new — the 2026 numerals loom large over Times Square in the days before New Year’s Eve. New technology is also being used to enhance the celebration, as each 7-foot-tall number is equipped with more than 100 LED light pucks, allowing for a wide range of color options for the first time. At the test on Friday, the numbers were lit up in red, white and blue to celebrate the newly announced partnership between New Year’s Eve in Times Square and America250, the non-partisan organization tasked with planning the nation’s 250th anniversary.
